IRIG: Autophagy in 2010

In 2008, we introduced a review article in Cell with title “Autophagy in the Pathogenesis of Disease” (Cell 2008;132:27-42). In 2009, autophagy were reported to be required for adipogenesis and be reduced in mouse liver under insulin resistance. This year, the trend in autophagy/metabolism research continues with more publications in the mainstream including Nature, Science, Cell and Cell Metabolism.  Autophagy seems to be another hot topic after cell apoptosis in the basic research in cell biology. It is involved in pathogenesis of cancer, aging, development, diabetes, obesity,  and cardiovascular diseases, et al. Autophagy is inhibited by insulin and nutrient (amino acids). Its reduction is expected in the presence of hyperinsulinemia/insulin resistance in obesity. The autophagy inhibition may be a new cellular link between insulin resistance and other disorders in type 2 diabetes. Below are some of the autophagy papers in 2010 for your reference.
